Travel Consent Letter for Minors Traveling with One Parent
Traveling abroad with your child alone? Whether you're divorced, separated, or the other parent can’t travel, Canadian border officials and international authorities often require a notarized consent letter. Here's everything you need to know to ensure stress-free travel.
When Is This Letter Needed?
A travel consent letter is strongly recommended when:
- Only one parent is accompanying the child
- The parents are divorced, separated, or share custody
- The other parent is unavailable due to health, location, or other reasons
- The child’s surname differs from the accompanying parent’s
These letters help prevent misunderstandings, border delays, or denied entry due to suspected child abduction or lack of legal authorization.

What Should Be Included in the Letter?
To be valid and accepted by immigration authorities, your notarized travel consent letter should include:
- Full names and contact information of both parents
- Full name and birthdate of the child
- Travel dates and destination(s)
- Airline or transportation info (optional but helpful)
- Name of the parent or guardian accompanying the child
- Notarized signature of the non-traveling parent
Don’t worry — we provide templates and help you get it right.
Why You Should Notarize the Letter
WA notarized letter is more than just a signed note. It proves:
- The absent parent gave informed, legal consent
- The child is authorized to travel internationally
- The document is recognized by border services and airlines globally
Without notarization, officials
may reject the letter or ask for further documentation.
