Travel Consent Letter for Minors Traveling Alone: What Parents Need to Know
If your child is traveling internationally without either parent — even if it’s with school, a summer program, or to visit family — most airlines, border agents, and countries will require a notarized travel consent letter.
This document proves that both parents or guardians approve of the trip and gives legal permission for the child to travel unaccompanied.
When Is This Required?
A notarized travel consent letter is required or strongly recommended when:
- A minor (under 18) travels without either parent
- The child is flying alone (as an unaccompanied minor)
- The child is traveling with an airline attendant, teacher, or coach
- The trip crosses international borders
Countries like the United States, Mexico, and most of Europe require or recommend written permission to avoid delays, denials, or legal issues at entry points.
What Should the Letter Include?

To be accepted by border services and airlines, the letter should include:
- The child’s
full name and
birthdate
- Details of the trip:
dates,
destinations, and
flight numbers
- Contact details of both parents or guardians
- Name of the person receiving the child (if any)
- Emergency contact information
- Notarized signatures from both parents (or the legal guardian)
We can provide a
template, or you can use your own and we’ll review it for completeness.
Why Notarization Matters
A signed note from a parent is not enough. Only notarization adds legal weight and makes the letter official. Without it, airlines or customs officers may:
- Refuse to board the child
- Deny entry into the destination country
- Delay re-entry into Canada
Having it notarized in advance helps you avoid last-minute issues and travel interruptions.
